What CI actually proves
A typical pipeline checks out code, installs dependencies, runs unit tests, maybe integration tests against fixtures, and builds artifacts. That proves consistency inside the assumptions of the pipeline — not that live databases, regional latency, feature flags, or partner APIs match what you modeled in CI.
Where reality diverges
Production adds concurrent traffic, partial deploys, schema drift, secrets rotation, and human overrides. A test suite cannot enumerate every failure mode; it samples a few. When something outside the sample breaks, the same commit that was "green" still ships broken behavior.
Why gates have to be evidence-backed
